The addition is an elevated one-story structure providing approximately 2,100 sf of additional cafeteria space. The structure is supported by four HSS12x12 columns on concrete spread footings and utilizes steel moment frames for lateral stability. One footing was supported by (4) micropiles due to limited space for a spread footing adjacent to an existing water main.
The floor framing was framed using composite steel beams and girders. Due to poor soil conditions within the first eight feet of earth, grade beams were designed to span between column footings which supported a CMU wall which closed off the lower portion of the structure. To fully open the area between the existing and new structure an existing column was removed. A steel transfer girder was provided at the roof which supported the existing framing for the column removal. Pre-loading of the beam was required to limit deflections during column removal.
