Law Library - University of Connecticut Hartford, CT
Structural Engineering

Architect:
S/L/A/M/ Collaborative with Hartman-Cox

Description:
The dominating characteristic of the Law Library is its massive weight. The Di Salvo Ericson Group provided complete structural engineering services for this granite-clad masonry, 130,000 square foot, gothic library. The primary structural challenge was, not only to design for the massive weight but, to meet the high seismic (earthquake) resistance requirements imposed by the State of Connecticut's new building code. Eccentrically braced steel frames provide the seismic protection.

This is also the first project sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Public Works to adopt "Partnering", a process that promotes non-adversarial relationships among the parties in a construction project.
