Profile:

The expansion and renovation of the Stevens Building meets the needs of an academic program that integrates science and studio art in the Upper School, grades 7 to 9, provides common space for older students and provides needed class, laboratory and music rooms. The expanded and reconfigured building combines 25,000 square feet of new construction with 16,000 square feet of renovated space.

The structural work for the additions and renovations to the Stevens Building includes designs for:

  • the partial demolition of the existing two story portion of Stevens School
  • a three story horizontal addition containing classrooms, science labs and art studios
  • a one story vertical addition
  • a one story horizontal addition of administrative space
  • the analysis and strengthening for code seismic forces in the existing building
  • the design for code compliance

The Stevens Building will meet the criteria for LEED certification, meaning it has been designed and built to have a low impact on the environment, provides healthy and comfortable surroundings for the occupants, and provides a positive economic impact over the lifecycle of the building. As examples, the south elevation of the existing building will have large new windows and a system of sun shade devices and sun shelves to redirect sunlight deeper into the classrooms. A new photovoltaic cell system will be installed on a new roof membrane over the existing building's flat roof.
