Greenwich Family Y - Greenwich, CT
Structural Engineering
Owner:
Greenwich Family Y
Description:
This expansion of the original 87 year old YMCA will transform the facility from a YMCA designed to accommodate 600 boys and men to a Family Y serving 8,000 members. The expansion includes two additions, as welll as major renovations to the existing building .

The additions to the Family Y accommodate a new gymnasium, an elevated Olympic size swimming pool, racquetball and squash courts and a full childcare center. The additions are supported above a two-story post-tensioned concrete waffle slab parking garage extending both above and below grade. The renovation of the existing historic structure includes a complete renovation of the interior with reconfigured space, handicapped access, modernization, and renovation to the original pool and gym.

To support the roof over the large new, column-free areas, curved steel roof trusses were chosen and are exposed to view from below as well as from outside the building through the curtain wall system around the perimeter walls.
